Michael's Story

In February 2009 at the age of 25, Michael was diagnosed with Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis (FSGS), a form of kidney disease. Upon his diagnosis, he immediately began dialysis. Doctors then told Michael he would need a kidney transplant. His mother and brother were both tested as possible kidney donors but were ultimately ruled out as matches. The third and final family member that was eligible to donate was his first cousin, Heather Blackley. After six months of rigorous testing, Heather was given the go-ahead to donate her kidney to Michael.

The transplant surgery will take place on Tuesday, June 1, at UNC Hospital. Michael is grateful for Heather's selflessness and her gift of life.
